Crafting Quality Homes: Chris Lewis of Crafted Design Build

September 19, 20243 min read

Building a home is more than just constructing a structure; it's about creating spaces where people can live, grow, and thrive. Chris Lewis of Crafted Design Build has made this his mission, crafting high-quality homes in Seattle’s Madrona neighborhood that combine thoughtful design and lasting craftsmanship. His passion for building with purpose and his deep connection to the community make his homes stand out in the local market.

A Decade of Building in Madrona

Chris’s journey in Madrona started nearly ten years ago when a friend sent him a picture of a “For Sale by Owner” sign barely visible in the overgrown grass of a nearby lot. After some encouragement, he called the owner and began a long-term investment in the area, gradually acquiring multiple parcels of land. Over time, he’s built strong relationships with the previous owners, most of whom he met personally before making a deal.

His latest project in Madrona consists of two homes designed with flexibility in mind. Both feature accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in the basement, offering future homeowners multiple options for use, whether for rental income, multi-generational living, or combining the spaces into one large home. “We wanted to give people the flexibility to live in the way that works best for them,” Chris explained.

Quality That Stands Out

Chris doesn’t just build houses—he creates homes that are meant to last. “I always overbuild by about 5 to 10 percent,” he said. This approach ensures that his homes are built with high-quality materials and finishes that stand the test of time. From custom wood beams to Carrera marble countertops, every detail reflects his commitment to quality.

Though his approach can mean going over budget, Chris sees this as an investment that pays off in the long run. “In any market, quality will rise to the top,” he said. Whether the real estate market is booming or slowing down, homes built with care tend to sell faster and hold their value better. Chris is confident that his attention to detail and superior craftsmanship will always make a difference.

A Strong Connection to the Neighborhood

Madrona is more than just a place where Chris builds; it’s where he has deep roots. He attended school nearby, and many of his friends and family live in the area. “I couldn’t afford Madison Park,” he joked, “so Madrona was the next best thing.” Over the years, Chris has developed a strong appreciation for the neighborhood’s unique characteristics, from its hills and views to its close-knit community.

From a developer’s perspective, Chris saw Madrona as a hidden gem. The neighborhood still had many older homes that were underutilized, and Chris saw an opportunity to bring modern, thoughtfully designed homes to the area while preserving its character. His latest homes, including those on 28th Avenue, reflect this vision, blending new construction with respect for the neighborhood’s history.

Hands-On Building and Attention to Detail

One thing that sets Chris apart from other developers is his hands-on approach. He is regularly on-site, ensuring that every aspect of the construction meets his high standards. “I can’t leave a house to a homeowner that I wouldn’t want to live in myself,” he said. This level of involvement ensures that every home he builds is something he can be proud of, down to the smallest details.

Chris’s commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. Other developers have even begun to mimic his style, a testament to his influence in the local market. “It’s flattering,” Chris said, “but it also shows that what we’re doing is making an impact.”

For Chris, building homes isn’t just a job; it’s a lifelong passion. His love for design and construction started at an early age, and today, he continues to create homes that reflect his deep understanding of craftsmanship and design.

As he continues to develop in Madrona, Chris is focused on building homes that will stand the test of time. His dedication to quality, local community, and thoughtful design make his work a standout in Seattle’s competitive market.
